Founded in 1885, Undurraga is one of Chile’s most prestigious wineries, consistently receiving high scores from top wine critics across the globe. Altazor, - A Voyage in a Parachute - is the masterpiece of Chilean poet Vicente Huidobro. Written during the peak of the European avant-garde movement in 1931, the name 'Altazor' is a combination of 'altura' (altitude) and 'azorado' (bewildered or taken aback) and this wine pays tribute to Huidobro's creationist and innovative vision. Sourced from grapes grown in the finest alluvial soils in Alto Maipo, Altazor expresses the character and finesse of Cabernet Sauvignon (90%). Small, significant contributions of Carménère and Carignan, from old dry farmed vines in southern Chile, contribute complexity and structure to the wine. Fed by gravity, the wine was made without any additions and following fermentation it was transferred to French oak barrels (30% new) where it spent 16 months. It received a further 18 months’ ageing in bottle prior to release. Altazor is an exceptional wine revealing expressive aromatic layers, balanced concentration and wonderful complexity. Deep red fruits and cassis are underpinned by mineral notes, graphite and tobacco. The structured palate shows depth of flavour and integrated tannins, through to an everlasting finish. Serve with rich red meats or mature cheese.
